Description
These Buttermilk Cheddar Biscuits are soft, flaky, and packed with cheesy flavor. The tanginess from the buttermilk complements the sharp cheddar, making them the perfect addition to any meal or served on their own.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and garlic powder (if using).
- Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese.
- Pour in the buttermilk and stir gently until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead a few times until smooth. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
- Using a biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter, if desired.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown on top.
- Allow the biscuits to cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For extra cheesy flavor, you can add more cheddar cheese into the dough or sprinkle some on top before baking.
- If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a quick substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to 3/4 cup of milk, letting it sit for 5 minutes.
- For a flakier texture, handle the dough as little as possible and keep the butter cold.
