Description
Soft, spiced hot cross buns filled with sweet candied fruit and topped with a traditional flour cross and glaze. Perfect for Easter or a cozy treat any time.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground allspice
- 2 large eggs
- 3/4 cup candied fruit, chopped
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for cross)
- 3 tbsp water (for cross)
- 1/4 cup apricot jam (for glaze)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
- Add melted butter, eggs, salt, spices, and flour. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Mix in the candied fruit and knead until evenly distributed.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide into 12 even pieces. Shape into balls and place on a baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
- Mix 1/4 cup flour and 3 tbsp water to form a paste. Pipe a cross over each bun.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
- Warm apricot jam and brush over hot buns for a glossy finish.
Notes
- Soak candied fruit in warm water or juice for 10 minutes for extra moisture.
- You can use a mix of raisins and candied orange peel if desired.
- Buns can be frozen and reheated.
