Description

Soft, spiced hot cross buns filled with sweet candied fruit and topped with a traditional flour cross and glaze. Perfect for Easter or a cozy treat any time.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup candied fruit, chopped
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for cross)
  • 3 tbsp water (for cross)
  • 1/4 cup apricot jam (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add melted butter, eggs, salt, spices, and flour. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Mix in the candied fruit and knead until evenly distributed.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide into 12 even pieces. Shape into balls and place on a baking sheet.
  7. Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  8. Mix 1/4 cup flour and 3 tbsp water to form a paste. Pipe a cross over each bun.
  9. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Warm apricot jam and brush over hot buns for a glossy finish.

Notes

  • Soak candied fruit in warm water or juice for 10 minutes for extra moisture.
  • You can use a mix of raisins and candied orange peel if desired.
  • Buns can be frozen and reheated.
