Description

A classic, flavorful homemade marinara sauce made from ripe tomatoes, garlic, onions, and herbs—perfect for pasta, pizza, or dipping.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 34 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 (28 oz) cans whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil or a few fresh basil leaves
  • 1/8 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste (optional)
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley or basil (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Stir in tomato paste if using and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Add whole peeled tomatoes with juice, crushing them by hand or blending slightly.
  6. Stir in salt, pepper, sugar, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes.
  7. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and simmer gently for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  9. Stir in fresh parsley or basil before serving.
  10. Use immediately or store in fridge for up to 5 days or freeze up to 3 months.

Notes

  • Use San Marzano tomatoes for best flavor.
  • Blend the sauce for a smoother texture if desired.
  • Add a splash of red wine for depth during sautéing.
  • Use butter instead of oil for a richer sauce.
  • Let the sauce sit a day in the fridge to develop flavor further.
