Description
A classic, flavorful homemade marinara sauce made from ripe tomatoes, garlic, onions, and herbs—perfect for pasta, pizza, or dipping.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3–4 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 (28 oz) cans whole peeled tomatoes
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp sugar (optional)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp dried basil or a few fresh basil leaves
- 1/8 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- 2 tbsp tomato paste (optional)
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley or basil (for garnish)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Stir in tomato paste if using and cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Add whole peeled tomatoes with juice, crushing them by hand or blending slightly.
- Stir in salt, pepper, sugar, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes.
- Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and simmer gently for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Adjust seasoning as needed.
- Stir in fresh parsley or basil before serving.
- Use immediately or store in fridge for up to 5 days or freeze up to 3 months.
Notes
- Use San Marzano tomatoes for best flavor.
- Blend the sauce for a smoother texture if desired.
- Add a splash of red wine for depth during sautéing.
- Use butter instead of oil for a richer sauce.
- Let the sauce sit a day in the fridge to develop flavor further.
