Description

Phyllo Meat Pie, also known as Egyptian Goulash, is a savory Middle Eastern pastry made with layers of crispy phyllo dough filled with spiced ground beef and baked until golden.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz), thawed
  • 1/2 cup melted butter or ghee
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add vegetable oil and sauté chopped onions until translucent.
  3. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne. Cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  5. Brush a 9×13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Layer half of the phyllo sheets in the dish, brushing each sheet with butter.
  6. Spread the meat filling evenly over the phyllo layers.
  7. Cover with the remaining phyllo sheets, again brushing each with butter.
  8. Using a sharp knife, cut the pie into squares or diamonds.
  9. In a bowl, whisk together milk and eggs. Pour the mixture evenly over the pie.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden and set.
  11. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Phyllo dough dries out quickly; keep unused sheets covered with a damp towel.
  • You can prepare the meat mixture a day ahead for quicker assembly.
  • For a richer flavor, use ghee instead of butter.
