Description
A savory and sweet breakfast casserole combining sausage, maple syrup, and waffles, perfect for brunch or a make-ahead morning treat.
Ingredients
- 6 frozen waffles, toasted and cut into cubes
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 6 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup maple syrup, plus extra for serving
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Butter or nonstick spray, for greasing the baking dish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and cooked through. Drain excess grease.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, salt, and pepper.
- Layer half of the waffle cubes in the prepared baking dish, followed by half of the cooked sausage and cheese. Repeat layers.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the waffle and sausage layers.
- Press down gently to ensure the waffles absorb the liquid. Let sit for 10–15 minutes or refrigerate overnight.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes, until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with additional maple syrup if desired.
Notes
- For extra flavor, use maple-flavored sausage.
- Can be prepared the night before and baked in the morning.
- Try adding diced apples or cooked bacon for variation.
