Description

A sweet and savory Southern side dish made by baking layers of sweet onions with butter, spices, and a mix of cheeses until bubbly and golden.

Ingredients

  • 34 large sweet onions (Vidalia preferred), sliced into 1/4 inch rings
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pats
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or smoked Gouda
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Slice onions into 1/4 inch rings and separate into individual layers.
  3. Layer the onions evenly in the baking dish and sprinkle with salt, garlic powder, oregano, dry mustard, and cayenne pepper.
  4. Dot the top with butter pieces.
  5. Evenly sprinkle cheddar, mozzarella or Gouda, and Parmesan over the onions.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 35–40 minutes until onions are soft and cheese is melted.
  7. Optional: uncover and bake for an additional 5–10 minutes for a browned, bubbly top.
  8. Serve warm as a side dish or topping.

Notes

  • Vidalia or similar sweet onions give the best flavor.
  • Smoked Gouda adds a rich, smoky twist if desired.
  • Uncover the dish briefly to crisp the cheese topping.
  • Great with grilled meats or as a burger topping.
  • Leftovers keep well in the fridge for 3–4 days.
