Description

This Vegan Black Bean Burger is a hearty and flavorful plant-based alternative to traditional burgers, made with black beans, oats, and spices—perfect for grilling, baking, or pan-frying.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 (15 oz) cans black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, avocado, vegan mayo, buns

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mash black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth with some chunks remaining.
  2. Add oats, breadcrumbs, red onion, garlic, soy sauce, olive oil, and spices. Mix until well combined and mixture holds together.
  3. Form the mixture into 4–5 patties using your hands.
  4. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and add a little oil.
  5. Cook patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned and heated through.
  6. Alternatively, bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  7. Serve on buns with desired toppings.

Notes

  • Make ahead and refrigerate patties for up to 3 days before cooking.
  • Freezes well—wrap individually and store up to 2 months.
  • Use a food processor for easier mixing and smoother texture if preferred.
  • Add chopped bell pepper or corn for extra flavor and texture.
